Business Phone Systems Evolution

Installation of voice and data cabling is a must today before a business can open its doors, but there was a time, not that long ago when business phone systems were a bit different. The history of business phone systems is an interesting history.

Of all the things that have affected how we do business, communication tools have had the biggest impact. Professional installation of voice and data cabling is the end product of over 100 years of evolution of the business phone system.

Can You Hear Me Now?

Today we take it for granted that business phone system installation will result in clear communication, but it has not always been quite that simple. Alexander Graham Bell could never have envisioned the power that his invention would unleash.

In the early days of the telephone, businesses were the first to line up to have one installed. As a matter of fact, for the first 25 years or so that the telephone was around, it was far more common for a business to have one than a residence.

When the first business telephone system was designed all calls were routed through a manual switchboard located at the telephone company. The user would pick up the phone and an operator was on the other end to route the call. This was the height of communication in the late 1800s.

The New Era in Communications

It was not until the 1960s that the PBX (private branch exchange) showed up to improve call routing and communications. The PBX allowed businesses to have their own dedicated network. Of course, it was not a network that a business today would find comfortable using but it was a big deal back then.

By the 1970s most businesses had jumped on the bandwagon and were using a PBX system for their communication needs. Things did not really jump forward in business telephone systems again until around 2005 when the VOIP was born.

Installation of voice and data cabling really got a push in 2008 when the VOIP was perfected. Today, voice, data, video and more can travel with lighting speed across cables. Business wireless access points are a new way to communicate.

Switching from traditional phone systems to VOIP not only provides more communication options but it can also save from 20% to 50% in costs. The evolution continues in communication. Get professional installation of voice and data cabling so you will be ready for what comes in the future.
